Chicago, we did it!

The warm weather has finally arrived, and that means it’s time to start planning your summer activities. This week, the Chicago Park District opened registration for the park district website for all his summer programsincluding the one many parents have been waiting for — day camps. Depending on the number of places remaining in the program, in-person registration begins on Saturday, May 14.

“Our camps across the city are themed this year, ‘Adventure Starts Here.’ All children in the camps will be introduced to nature, sports, health and fitness, really working their brains and bodies throughout the summer so that when they return home they will be a little tired! said Rosa Escareño, the Chicago Park District’s new superintendent.

Online registration for park programs at McFetridge Sports Center, Morgan Park Sports Center, Addams Park and Gately Park begins Tuesday, May 31, followed by in-person registration on Saturday, June 4. Programs at these facilities run from June 13 through August. 21. Programs hosted in these facilities will be viewable online from Tuesday, May 17.

Escareño also highlighted the expansion of Girls PLAY, a program that previously ran as one-day events throughout the year, into a full summer camp offering.

Although Escareño calls CPD day camps “the best deal in town” cost-wise, she wants people to know that there are discounts available for those who need it.

Escareño also says that while the park district is always looking for more candidates for lifeguard and other positions, she’s optimistic they’ll be fully staffed in time for the summer swim. She encouraged more people to apply for lifeguard positions and other roles in the park district.

“One thing, because I’m new here, I’m learning that our lifeguards have to meet a very high safety threshold…the lifeguards that you see there, we entrust the lives of our residents to them. So we want to make sure we get it right. We’re definitely optimistic with the numbers we’re seeing,” Escareño said. “Our priorities are to open the beaches at the end of May, but our swimming pools start to open at the end of June and we are hopeful of having very good news.”
