A Chicago man was arrested this week about 200 miles from the city in connection with a Christmas Day shooting that killed a 24-year-old man in Logan Square last year.

Santi Castaneda, 22, was charged on Friday with one count of first-degree murder stemming from the Dec. 25, 2021, shooting that killed Giovanni Lozano. Lozano was not identified during a hearing on Friday, but his name had already been reported by several media outlets.

Chicago police said Castaneda was arrested in Green Bay on Thursday, more than five months after the shooting.

According to Cook County prosecutors, Castaneda was attending a gathering with friends that day when the group went to a house in the 3000 block of North Avers Avenue.

Once there, an acquaintance there told Castaneda to wait for him, because this man had to drive his girlfriend to a Christmas party for work. Prosecutors said that at that time, Castaneda wore a distinctive two-tone coat and could be seen on surveillance video after any vehicle passing through the area.

Just after 10:30 p.m., a black SUV driven by Lozano drove past that area, and prosecutors said Castaneda could again be seen following the vehicle. The SUV can be heard honking off-camera, and as it passed the building where Castaneda was standing a second time, Castaneda reportedly raised his arm and began firing in its direction.

Prosecutors said the SUV stopped briefly, then continued driving until it crashed nearby, while Castaneda ran inside the building he was standing near. Lozano was struck in the back of the head and knee and died.

The shooting itself was captured on video, prosecutors say, and the on-site acquaintance who told Castaneda to wait identified Castaneda in eight separate photos taken by surveillance cameras that recorded the moments just before the shooting. shooting.

Block Club Chicago reported in December, that Lozano was going to his grandmother’s house in West Humboldt Park for a Christmas party when he was killed. He reportedly lived a few blocks from where the shooting happened.

At Friday’s hearing, a Cook County judge ordered Castaneda held without bond. He is due back in court on June 17.
